For a training course to be successful, a number of different factors need to be considered. These need to be taken into account both at the planning stage and also throughout the course itself.
The first point should be to clearly identify the ultimate aim of the course. Next, its target audience needs to be carefully assessed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the content of the course should be pitched accordingly. In particular, the requirements and aptitudes of all the trainees should be well matched,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so that there is not too wide a range of abilities and experience. Trainees should also be selected so that during the course they are able to meet new people and/or improve their acquaintance with people they do not know very well.
The environment in which the course is held is also very important. In all cases it must be comfortable and quiet, in order to avoid distractions caused by physical or mental discomfort,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or by external influences such as traffic noise. But on the other hand it should not be held in a location which is too remote or too isolated, as not only can this present trainees with travelling problems,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it can also give them the psychological impression that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], like The Prisoner, they are being deliberately cut off from the outside world.
With regard to content, a good course will include a well-thought-out balance of informative instructional talks and practical hands-on tasks. The principle of wall-to-wall lectures (or,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as it is now known,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “Death By Powerpoint”) should be avoided, as the amount which the trainees learn from this process alone can be extremely limited. It is still a widely-held view that a lecture can be defined as a means whereby information is transferred from the lecturer’s notes to the student’s notes without passing through the minds of either.
In practical terms, the content of the course must not be too intense and it should not be too long overall. The concentration span of an average person rarely lasts longer than 45 minutes, so the course should incorporate regular short breaks throughout – ideally at least one per hour. If the course is a residential one,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then there should be no course activity during the evenings. The course must not put the trainees under unnecessary stress,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and particularly not towards the end. After a notorious case some years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when a demob-happy but totally exhausted delegate was killed whilst driving home from a particularly stressful course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this principle has been widely adopted by most reputable course organisers. Above all, the trainees should leave at the end of the course with a favourable impression and the feeling that the course itself has been a positive experience.
For NLP training courses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], look no further.
